Former Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Luis Gonzalez has been referred to as a hero for his game-winning hit in the 2001 World Series. On Friday, he earned that title. After seeing a head-on car crash, Gonzalez pulled a woman out of the fiery wreckage.

Gonzalez jumped into action after seeing a car jump the median and collide with another vehicle, according to the Arizona Republic.

“I just reacted. I didn’t think about it, to be honest with you,” Gonzalez said Saturday morning.

“I was just trying to get the lady out of the car,” Gonzalez said. “She was a little dazed and groggy. I was like, ‘Open the door, open the door, the other car is on fire.’ I didn’t know if the car was going to blow up or something because I was seeing flames coming out of it.”

Gonzalez and a friend, Mike Mehan, managed to pull the woman from the car and get her to safety. The third man in the group, Artie Cuffari, called 911 and managed to get video of the aftermath. The video shows Gonzalez holding the woman after the crash as a firefighter attempts to put out the flames.

Gonzalez reached out to police to follow up on the condition of both drivers. He was told they were both doing OK.

The 49-year-old Gonzalez spent 19 years in the majors, eight of which came with the D-Backs. Since retiring in 2008, Gonzalez has stayed involved in the game. He’s currently a member of the Diamondbacks’ front office.
