Dick’s Sporting Goods to expand in Sacramento with massive 2-story store. When does it open?
Popular sporting goods chain Dick’s Sporting Goods is expanding in the Sacramento area with a massive new store.
The retailer will open its new Dick’s House of Sport location at Arden Fair mall at 1689 Arden Way.
“We’re excited to introduce Dick’s House of Sport to Arden Fair, marking a major step in the evolution of our center,” Arden Fair senior marketing manager Nathan Spradlin wrote in an email to The Sacramento Bee. “Dick’s House of Sport is more than a store. It’s an experience, blending premium retail with interactive sports facilities and community engagement.”
Here’s what to expect:
What is Dick’s Sporting Goods?
Entrepreneur Dick Stack started Dick’s Sporting Goods as a bait-and-tackle shop in Binghamton, New York, in 1948, according to the company’s website said.
Stack, an avid fisherman, worked at an U.S. Army surplus store before opening his own business with $300 from his grandmother, the website said.
Stack expanded his store’s offerings in 1952, adding work clothes, sportswear, camping gear and picnic supplies.
He opened a second store New York location in 1971.
Over the decades, Dick’s Sporting Goods has expanded to more than 850 stores under the Dick’s Sporting Goods, Golf Galaxy, Public Lands, Going Going Gone! and Warehouse Sale brands.
The store also sells items online and through a mobile app, the website said.
Dick’s Sporting Goods offers a wide range of sports and outdoor equipment, as well as athletic apparel and footwear.
Where is new Sacramento location?
Dick’s House of Sport will take over the former Sears space at the west end of the mall, adjacent to Forever 21, Champs Sporting Goods and Cinnabon, Spradlin said.
The two-story building features 156,000 square feet of retail space, according to TransformCo Properties.
“The House of Sport will encompass the full footprint that Sears and the auto center consisted of,” Spradlin said. “We acquired the former Sears space in 2022 with a vision to transform it into something dynamic. This is a key milestone in that journey.”
What’s in store at Dick’s House of Sport?
According to Dick’s Sporting Goods, the Dick’s House of Sport concept was first introduced in 2021.
The company described it as a “multi-sport experiential store” where customers can “find the top gear to perform your best, practice your skills, connect with your community and attend special events” in an “interactive space.”
Some House of Sport locations feature attractions such as a rock climbing wall, golf pro shop, playing field, ice rink and HitTrax cage for baseball, softball and other sports.
Spradlin said Dick’s House of Sport at Arden Fair mall will be the first of its kind to open in California.
When does Arden Fair mall location open?
The Arden Fair mall property that will house Dick’s House of Sport had been officially turned over to Dick’s Sporting Goods as of Wednesday, Jan. 29, Spradlin said.
Construction is expected to begin sometime in 2025.
Spradlin said the location is estimated to open in 2026.
“Arden Fair’s strategy has been to bring in forward-thinking retailers that enhance the shopping experience, and House of Sport is a perfect example,” Spradlin said. “Sacramento has a strong sports culture, from youth athletics to professional teams, and this concept is a natural fit for our community.
“House of Sport will not only drive traffic but also activate our space in a way that benefits visitors, tenants, and the broader retail environment.”
