Distressed dog rescued from freezing pond in Lake Echo
A small dog is recovering at a Dartmouth animal shelter after being discovered in a freezing pond in Lake Echo this week.
An RCMP officer waded into the water and rescued the 10-year-old Sheltie mix early Wednesday morning after someone living in the area heard a whimpering sound in a swampy area.
Const. Keith Deveau says it appeared the dog broke through the ice but she refused to budge when he and his partner tried to coax her out with food.
"We weren't sure if it was just afraid of us or injured," he said. "The dog was wet, shivering ... there was large balls of snow and ice hanging off the fur of the dog."
The dog wasn't happy to see the rescuers, either. She snapped a few times before Deveau and a local resident managed to wade through the ice and pick her up.
Deveau's partner was waiting nearby with a patrol jacket they used as a blanket.
Police took the dog to a clinic for examination and say the dog has arthritis. She wasn't wearing a collar and didn't have a microchip.
Investigators are now looking for the dog's owner. RCMP say people need to remember to keep their dogs inside during the winter.
