Ditch days coming to BV with free garbage bag drop off

Eganville – Bonnechere Valley council is hoping people will take to the ditches on the weekend of May 15 and 16 and clean up rubbish, then haul it to the dump where a free drop off has been arranged for ditch garbage.

“Can we have a ditch day?” Mayor Jennifer Murphy asked last Tuesday during a committee meeting of council as she sparked the discussion. “

The mayor said the ditches need to be cleaned in the municipality.

“It’s phenomenal to me, beer bottles and McDonald’s cartons outside my home,” she said. “Would council be willing to give them one bag of garbage free at the sites?”

Having people clean up the ditches and then drop off the bag would make BV a much cleaner place, she said.

Councillor Tim Schison was quick to jump on board. He pointed out in his work with his truck he sees a lot of roads and there is a lot of garbage.

“From my perspective I see a lot more when I am driving,” he said. “I see where a lot of people can’t because I am seven feet in the air.”

Councillor Brent Patrick said he also supported the initiative and having it on a specific weekend.

“It is easiest for people to bring it on a specific day,” he noted.

“My concern is one bag will not go very far,” Councillor Merv Buckwald said.

Mayor Murphy said the plantation across the road from her home was recently cut and when she was walking, she was shocked to see the garbage along her road. She said she quickly filled half a bag in a short time.

Coun. Schison said he recently saw three large garbage bags on Cormac Road in the ditch.

Council agreed May 15 and 16 was a good weekend because it was before the long weekend.

“One free bag of garbage that came from the ditch,” Mayor Murphy said. “People can take it to the dump.”

With transfer sites all over the municipality, residents will be able to clean up a wide area, Coun. Schison said.

“You can clean the ditch whenever you want, but on May 15 or 16, take it to the waste transfer site,” the mayor said.
