Dive crew discovers body of man who fell off powerboat on Lake St. Clair

Search called off for reported missing swimmer at Belle Isle beach

The search for a missing boater is over after his body was recovered in Lake St. Clair on Saturday.

The 44-year-old man was located by a dive team near the location where he went missing, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The man fell off a powerboat Friday night around 8 p.m. near Metro Beach. He did not know how to swim and the life jacket he was wearing wasn't properly buckled, so it came off when he hit the water, according to the Coast Guard.

"We realize that this is a most difficult time for the family and friends of this man, and our thoughts and prayers go out to them," said spokesperson Lt. Ben Chamberlain. "We want to remind everyone who goes out on the water to understand the risks, always be vigilant to help minimize accidents, always wear a life jacket and have a working knowledge of your safety equipment."

Macomb County Police was called in to help with the search which lasted more than 15 hours and covered more than 330 square kilometres.
