Dog that killed goat, donkey at Dufferin farm not rabid
One of the two dogs that killed a donkey and a goat at a farm in Dufferin last month has tested negative for rabies, according to the RCMP.
The other dog, which returned home on May 2 in "rough shape," was put down by a local veterinarian and will also be tested, said Cpl. Jayson Hansen, of the St. Stephen detachment.
He said the public should not be concerned now that both dogs have been put down and neither one bit a human.
Rabies, a viral disease that infects the nervous system and spreads to the brain, can be lethal for animals and humans, if not treated right away.
About a dozen cases of rabies have been confirmed in the Charlotte County area in the past year, public health officials have said.
Most of the cases have been reported in the past three months, and involved raccoons.
Missing dog had prompted warning
Hansen said the second dog was wounded by porcupine quills when it returned home.
It has been sent to Saint John for further testing, he said.
Hansen could not say how long it will take to get the results.
RCMP had issued a public warning about the dark-coloured bulldog when it was on the loose.
They said one of the dogs had also lunged at the farmer during the incident on Todds Point Road, but the farmer was not injured.
One of the dogs was captured following the incident and euthanized.
The owner of the dogs told CBC News the animals had escaped from their pen, which was damaged during the winter.
