Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, his wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau and Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne were among the dignitaries who were marching in the procession. Trudeau was casually dressed in a blue blazer and pink shirt, with a temporary tattoo of a rainbow-coloured maple leaf on his left cheek.

Wettlaufer sentenced to life in prison with no parole for 25 years
Elizabeth Wettlaufer pleaded guilty last month to eight counts of first-degree murder, four counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault. Earlier today, Wettlaufer told her sentencing hearing she was truly sorry for murdering and injuring vulnerable patients in her care. Wettlaufer has admitted to using insulin in all 14 cases that stretched from 2007 to 2016, and has said she believed she was an instrument of God.

Queen of Nanaimo ferry sailings cancelled for Monday
BC Ferries said Queen of Nanaimo sailings from the Lower Mainland to the Gulf Islands will be cancelled Monday as it tries to repair a problem with the aging vessel's propeller. "Engineering is still working on the ship," spokesperson Deborah Marshall wrote Sunday in an email to CBC News. The Queen of Nanaimo was taken out of service on Friday, while the newer Salish Eagle continued running its routes between Tsawwassen and the Gulf Islands.

Successful SpaceX launch delivers satellites into orbit
The American company SpaceX on Sunday successfully placed 10 satellites for the communications company Iridium into orbit using a Falcon 9 rocket. After launching as scheduled from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 1:25 pm local time (2025 GMT), the Falcon 9's first stage returned less than eight minutes after taking off. SpaceX has successfully landed multiple rockets on both land and water, as part of its effort to bring down the cost of space flight by re-using multimillion dollar components instead of jettisoning them in the ocean after launch.

Kite flyers and kite makers from around the world were soaring at the Windscape Kite Festival in Swift Current, Sask. over the weekend. Swift Current, 240 kilometres southwest of Regina, has a population of just over 15,000 people, but attracts kite lovers from all over the world to their festival. UK: All samples from high-rise towers fail fire safety tests
The list of high-rise apartment towers in Britain that have failed fire safety tests grew to 60, officials said Sunday, revealing the mounting challenge the government faces in the aftermath of London's Grenfell Tower fire tragedy. All of the buildings for which external cladding samples were so far submitted failed combustibility tests, Communities Secretary Sajid Javid said. The number of buildings at risk is likely to grow as owners and local officials provide more samples for safety tests.

'A big loss': Last bank pulls out of Lachine's Saint-Pierre neighbourhood
In the Saint-Pierre neighbourhood of Lachine, the only remaining financial institution is pulling out completely at the end of the month by removing its automatic teller machine. The Caisse Desjardins closed its branch on St-Jacques Street last October and now is putting an end to the last of its services, its guichet. "It's a big loss for the community," said David Marshall, director of Revitalisation Saint-Pierre.

Paws in Motion: Furry friends meet for Winnipeg Humane Society's largest fundraising event
Tails wagging and tags jingling, hundreds of pets and people met in Assiniboine Park on Sunday to raise money for the Winnipeg Humane Society. The event is the largest fundraiser of the year for the Winnipeg Humane Society and organizers hope to bring in around $150,000 this year, said CEO Javier Schwersensky. The event had already raised around $60,000 before the walk began, Schwersensky said.

Homegrown olive oil a labour of love for B.C. couple
This year, a few lucky British Columbians got their hands on some locally grown extra virgin olive oil — all thanks to a pair of intrepid farmers on Salt Spring Island. George and Sheri Braun produced just 35 litres of cold-pressed oil from their harvest of 450 kilograms at The Olive Farm this December, and it's already all sold out. The Brauns say theirs is the first olive oil produced in Canada.

New wilderness trail opens up 'wonderland' on Vancouver Island
The multi-use Sooke Hills Wilderness trail cuts through 13 kilometres of hilly terrain to connect Greater Victoria with the Cowichan Valley. Nine kilometres were also added to the existing Cowichan Valley Trail to make the connection. "It's just opened up a huge wonderland for cyclists and hikers," said Mike Hicks, a director with the Capital Regional District.

Hundreds of cyclists rode to help erase the stigma associated with mental illness in Regina's Ride Don't Hide event on Sunday. The community bike ride was organized to raise money for the Regina branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), and to raise awareness surrounding mental health issues in Regina. "One in five Canadians are affected by mental illness at some point in their life," said Shannon Patton, a director with the CMHA Regina branch.

A southern Alberta thrift store wants to know where the best community thrift stores are around the province and hope a Facebook contest is the way to go. "We just thought it would be something fun to do to bring awareness to thrift stores throughout the province and see the reaction from the people in the community," Len Buckley of Canmore's Crossway Community Thrift told The Homestretch. Buckley says thrift stores in smaller towns tend to have a special relationship with the community.

Anti-Islam rally in Calgary meets with counter-protest but remains peaceful
The event billed on social media as a "Patriotic Unity Mega Festival" in front of Calgary's city hall on Sunday was met by an opposing group rallying against what they saw as a message of intolerance. Gathered on one side of the municipal plaza were members of the Worldwide Coalition Against Islam (WCAI), which was denied a special event permit for the rally by the city. Across the plaza were members of Calgary Anti-Fascist Action (AFA), who say they wanted to show unity against what they called messages of intolerance and hate.

Fire breaks out in west Edmonton apartment building
All people and cats escaped their west Edmonton apartment building after a fire broke out in one of the suites Sunday afternoon. Firefighters received multiple calls to the building near 154th Street and 100th Avenue. Crews entered the building immediately to try to contain the blaze.

A stranded British and Irish Lions supporter has told how a stranger's act of kindness resulted in him bunking down at the home of All Blacks sensation Rieko Ioane and his brother Akira. The stranger was the players' mother Sandra, who took pity on Lions fan Alex Edwards when he turned up at the Ponsonby Rugby Club in Auckland, where she works, asking to park his van overnight. "Her two lads came in and she said: 'This is Akira and Rieko'," he told Radio Sport of the incident, which took place before the Lions-Blues match earlier this month.
