Dog saved by Fredericton firefighters after falling through ice

Man rescued from 2nd-storey window as fire rips through Fredericton home

A dog was taken to a local veterinarian to be checked after being rescued from the icy cold St. John River in Fredericton Saturday morning.

Acting platoon Captain John Dunbar says two firefighters in ice water rescue suits used the rapid deployment craft to get to the dog as quickly as possible from their location off the Woodstock Road.

"They managed to make their way out to the dog and got him on board and brought him to shore."

Dunbar said the dog was about 100 to 150 feet off the shore and from that point the river is open. He added the dog went through the ice at that point and could not get back up on the ice.

"It's not safe to be on the ice," said Dunbar.

Days of warm temperatures and rain have weakened the ice and the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization is cautioning people to be careful as ice on the river continues to deteriorate.

The EMO is also warning there could be localized flooding with the continued rainfall.

They say river ice observers are on call and scheduled to be deployed on Monday when flows are forecast to be peaking. Small rivers and streams may see ice breakup resulting in rapid water level increases.
