Dog in seniors’ home a popular addition

A dog living at a Charlottetown seniors’ home is proving to be amongst its most popular residents.

Lady, a seven-year-old black Labrador mix, recently started roaming the halls of the Mount Continuing Care Community.

“She never barks, she never seems to get annoyed with people,” said resident Orlo Jones.

“She’s just the dearest friend you’d find.”

Management at the Mount had been thinking about getting a dog when they heard about Lady, whose elderly owner had died, and was looking for a new home.

“She really makes it feel homey here, less institutional and more like someone’s home, where you might be greeted by a friendly pet at the door,” said Mount administrator Lindsay Dickieson.

Lady is a good companion, said Dickieson, and spends hours during the day roaming the halls, dropping in on different residents. Sometimes it’s a quick visit, and other times she will curl up in a corner for an hour or more.

“I love Lady, I love her. I would take her and keep her if I had the chance,” said resident Anna Paquet

“I think it’s good. It’s good for the people.”

Lady goes home with different staff members at night, but roams freely through many areas of the Mount during the day.

“When you’re tired of talking about being sick, or not feeling well, she just brings that little bit of happiness and joy to people,” said Dickieson.
