Donations sought for Victoria students' holiday emporium

It took Ebenezer Scrooge four visits from sombre ghosts to discover the true spirit of Christmas, but students at George Jay Elementary in Victoria are getting to enjoy the thrill of giving, without involving the afterlife.

The school is holding its annual Holiday Emporium in mid-December and it's looking for donations.

"We're looking for candles, toys, ties," said Beth Threlfall, vice president of the parent advisory for George Jay Elementary.

"CDs, puzzles, picture frames … really anything that is of good quality."

This is the school's 10th year putting on the annual bazaar. It gives students an opportunity to buy Christmas gifts for family members, for $1 a piece.

"It's very important part of our school because it really allows a lot of our families who can't really afford to shop at this time of year ... the opportunity to buy some really lovely things for their families."

Volunteers will be setting up the school gym for the event on Dec. 16. The next day kids will be teamed up with a high school buddy to help them pick out gifts.

"Each classroom gets a time slot where they get to come down into the gym," said Threfall.

"The kids are always just so excited … once they come into the room and see all the different variety of things that they can choose."

Once they've made their picks, a team of volunteers will wrap the gifts for the children to take home.

Donations can be dropped off directly at the school starting Dec. 1 at 1118 Princess Ave. Threlfall says all the proceeds from the emporium go back to the school, to help pay for things like field trips.
