Krispy Kreme bosses have been forced to defend themselves after a shocking photo showed thousands of unsold doughnuts going to waste.

Bins outside the Avonmeads Retail Park branch in Bristol were overflowing with stacks of sweet treats on Monday night.

Critics have slammed the waste as “disgusting” and have demanded the chain either reduce the amount they produce or give away leftover products to the needy.

Businessman Chris Cleeves, who too the photo, said: The 43-year-old said: “I totally understand that as part of what they offer, Krispy Kreme have the theatre side to their retail - customer like to see the doughnuts being made in the store.

"But if they are creating that much waste, surely they should be thinking about changing the way they do things.

"Wouldn’t it be better to donate them to the homeless of hungry?

"Or they could even perhaps ship them to the immigration borders where people are desperate for food.”

Krispy Kreme said that they only sell products that are baked on the day and anything unsold in 24 hours would have to be thrown away.

They also claimed the bins that were photographed were from nine stores and were only built up as they had no access to the recycling unit for three days.

They said: "We’re proud that our doughnuts are made fresh daily.

"We use demand-planning models to give us the best possible forecasts of how many doughnuts we need which helps us to keep our waste to a minimum.”

They added: "Last week we changed our recycling processes so that we now take our waste directly to a unit is housed by the Bristol Port Company at the Portbury Docks for recycling.

"Initially, due to the security protocols at the docks, we were unable to gain access this weekend. As a result the waste in the photograph is from Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

"This has now been resolved so that our drivers will be able to access the recycling facility over the weekend.”
