Downton Abbey's Dan Stevens meets his ex-wife's ghost in hilarious Blithe Spirit trailer
Under usual circumstances, having your wife return from the dead would probably be considered a good thing – but not if you've already remarried.
In the first trailer for Blithe Spirit – a new comedy based on Noel Coward's classic play of the same name – Downton Abbey's Dan Stevens finds himself in that exact predicament as he ends up face-to-face with the spirit of his deceased spouse Elvira (Leslie Mann).
Stevens plays a best-selling novelist named Charles, who is struggling with a serious case of writer's block and a fast approaching deadline for his first screenplay.
His second wife Ruth (Isla Fisher) is doing everything she can to keep him focused, but Charles needs a little more inspiration.
That's when he turns to Madame Arcati (Judi Dench), a medium recently exposed as a fraud, to perform a séance in their home.
However, they all get a bit more than they bargained for as Acarti accidentally summons Elvira's spirit, who sets out to kill Charles so they can spend eternity together. Hilarity ensues.
The trailer gives us a glimpse of some of the slapstick comedy and dry humour that'll be on display, with Dench naturally standing out as the main provider of laughs.
"I'll have to go into a trance," she says at the séance, before vibrating uncontrollably, screaming like R2-D2 and then falling over.
Blithe Spirit is directed by Edward Hall (Downton Abbey, Spooks) and also stars Julian Rhind-Tutt (Rush, Stardust), Emilia Fox (Silent Witness, Delicious), Adil Ray (Citizen Khan, Ackley Bridge) and James Fleet (Outlander, Four Weddings and a Funeral).
Blithe Spirit is in cinemas on May 1.
