Dozens of radio stations nationwide to broadcast Breonna Taylor memorial

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Dozens of radio stations across the country will carry a broadcast Thursday to commemorate Breonna Taylor, the 26-year-old Black woman and emergency room technician who was unarmed when shot killed by police inside her home in March.

Led by Louisville radio station 97.1 FM WXOX, the broadcast will start at 2 p.m. ET and feature Taylor's favorite song, "Everything" by Mary J. Blige, according to an email sent by the station's president, Sharon Scott, to several radio stations and obtained by The Courier Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network.

The song will be introduced by Taylor's family and "followed by a reading of names accompanied by audio from the Louisville protests," Scott wrote in the email.

"On this day, we will pause our broadcast to recognize the women who were stolen from their families and loved ones far too soon," a Facebook event description for the broadcast says. "Together we will celebrate the lives of these unique individuals — recognize the pain their loss has caused their communities and use our voices to demand the justice they deserve.

For more than 75 days, protesters in Louisville have taken to the streets in largely peaceful demonstrations to demand that the officers involved in the fatal shooting of Taylor be fired by Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer and criminally charged by Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron.

One officer, Brett Hankison, has been terminated by interim Louisville Metro Police Chief Robert Schroeder. The other two, Jonathan Mattingly and Myles Cosgrove, are on administrative reassignment.

Last week, Cameron told The Courier Journal that his office is waiting for information on ballistics tests the FBI has been conducting. He did not provide an estimate when his team will complete its investigation and release results.

Thursday marks five months since Taylor's death.
