Dozens in St. Charles awake to find vehicle windows smashed in

Dozens of residents in Winnipeg's St. Charles neighbourhood woke up Monday morning to find windows in their vehicles smashed in.

Const. Eric Hofley with the Winnipeg Police Service said there were five confirmed reports of vehicle windows being broken in on Stradford Street and two on Buchanan Boulevard.

But Debbie Delaronde said there were many more than that vandalized.

Delaronde parked her car on Stradford at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday night. She awoke at 5 a.m. Monday to move the car back on to her driveway after her son-in-law left for work and found the rear window smashed.

Delaronde said she noticed a few other cars on the street had been hit, too. Her husband and a neighbour walked down the block to assess the damage.

"They counted at least 35," Delaronde said. "They went all the way down to Hamilton [Avenue]."

Delaronde said she sleeps with the window in her bedroom slightly open but heard nothing the night before.

"I was kind of upset," she said. "This close to Christmas and you've got to deal with this."

Agostinho Grilo also lives on Stradford. He said both his son and daughter's vehicles were smashed.

He said his daughter heard some laughing and screaming the night before but went outside and the revellers were gone.

Grilo added that it's hard to understand why anyone would act so senselessly and cost people hard-earned money.

"People try and make a couple of bucks a day, then people come and do that — that's not fair," he said.

Police said it doesn't appear anything was stolen from the damaged vehicles.

Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to call police at 204-986-6222.
