Draft Volunteer Firefighter Remuneration Policy partner feedback

During the M.D. of Taber Council Meeting that took place on May 14, Administration spoke to Council about consultations they completed with partners in Regional Fire Services, that includes both the Town of Vauxhall and Village of Barnwell regarding the replacement Volunteer Firefighter Renumeration Policy.

The replacement Policy, Administration, said came about after they reviewed the existing Volunteer Firefighter Honorarium Policy in 2022 by resolution, drafted a replacement Volunteer Firefighter Remuneration Policy with the objective of providing a fair and current remuneration model reinforcing support for the Volunteer Firefighters, and presented that draft to Council on March 26, 2024 for consideration.

From there, Council requested that Administration engage in consultations with partners in Regional Fire Services and this was done.

The feedback, Administration said, included a recommendation that the M.D. of Taber approve the proposed Volunteer Firefighter Remuneration Policy effective July 1, 2024, to replace the existing Firefighter Honorarium Policy, intended to provide current and adequate compensation for volunteer fire fighters that support the delivery of MDT Regional Fire Services.

The Town of Vauxhall, Administration said, also provided support by passing a motion at the May 6, 2024, meeting of the Vauxhall Town Council to approve the Town of Vauxhall’s support for the draft Volunteer Firefighter Remuneration Policy as presented to take effect July 1, 2024, along with a supporting budget addition of $9,759.12.

The Village of Barnwell, Administration said, also agreed to support the Volunteer Firefighter Renumeration Policy taking effect July 1, 2024, and they will support the operating budget increase of January 1, 2025, that is intended to provide fair and current renumeration in support of the regional fire partnership of volunteer firefighters and authorize the updating of the regional fire partnership agreement.

A motion was made that the M.D. of Taber approve the proposed Volunteer Firefighter Remuneration policy, which is effective July 1, 2024, to replace the existing firefighter honorarium policy intended to provide current and adequate compensation for volunteer firefighters that support the delivery of M.D. of Taber Regional Fire Services.
