MARSEILLE, France — Having led Marseille back to the Champions League and united the hard-to-please fans behind him, coach Jorge Sampaoli left the team's preseason preparations in tatters when he quit on Friday. After Marseille announced his departure, Sampaoli claimed his objectives were not met by the club — even though there was seemingly no bitterness between him and club president Pablo Longoria. It seemed to be simply a matter of principle since Sampaoli didn't even ask for compensation. “

Dr. Tiffany Brooks's career was sparked by something that happened during her childhood. "Back in elementary school, my mom had a surgery and that got me interested in medicine ... looking up YouTube videos all the time, learning what it was all about," she said. Years later, that curiosity led to Brooks graduating from Dalhousie University's school of medicine in May. She's starting her residency in family medicine this month. Brooks is the first person to become a medical doctor from Sitansisk

A burst of good news for strawberry-lovers and farmers: the plump, juicy berries are maturing early this year, at least for one grower. Lots of moisture last fall and this spring, and the lack of late frosts, are making for a bumper crop, according to David Walker, the owner of Sunset U-Pick in Fredericton. "It looks like it's going to be one of the best seasons we've ever had," he said speaking to Information Morning Moncton. Walker said Canada Day will mark the peak of the season at the U-pick
HONG KONG (Reuters) -There is no reason to change Hong Kong's "one country, two systems" formula of governance, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on a rare visit to the global financial hub after swearing in the city's new leader, John Lee, on Friday. Britain returned Hong Kong to Chinese rule on July 1, 1997, with Beijing promising wide-ranging autonomy, unfettered individual rights and judicial independence at least until 2047. China's critics accuse authorities of trampling on those freedoms, unavailable on the authoritarian mainland, with a sweeping national security law imposed by Beijing on the city in 2020 after mass pro-democracy protests the year before.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida judge said Thursday that he will temporarily block a 15-week ban on abortions in his state, but his bench ruling won't take effect before the ban becomes law Friday — an issue that could cause confusion for patients as well as abortion providers. Meanwhile, a Kentucky judge temporarily blocked that state's near-total ban on abortions, allowing the procedures to resume after they were abruptly stopped when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last week.
For the first time in three years, thousands of people were able to party without COVID-19 restrictions at the Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa. David Akin explains why this year's event changed venues, how it made history, and how it recognized the road to truth and reconciliation with Indigenous communities.
After two years of the COVID-19 pandemic subduing western parties around Calgary, this year's Stampede with no health restrictions should draw out big crowds. One big feature of the "Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth" missing for the past two years was the iconic tents that sprout up around the city bringing music, dancing and drinking under one plastic roof. The usual suspects will be back for 2022, like Cowboys and Nashville North on the Stampede grounds. But there are also a couple of new ones t
High E. coli counts mean those looking to beat the heat at the beach may want to choose carefully. The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit says six beaches — Belle River Beach, Colchester Beach, Holiday Beach, Mettawas Beach, Point Pelee North West Beach and Seacliff Beach — are not currently recommended for swimming due to the presence of the illness-causing bacteria. The beaches are under a warning, meaning the waters are unsafe for swimming, but they remain open. Cedar Beach, Cedar Island Beach

Land claim settlement agreements can be full of legal jargon and complex writing, but Marlisa Brown said she has an idea of how to make them more accessible. Her policy research paper Reconnecting to Our Relations: The Need for Formal Land Claim and Self-Government Education in the Northwest Territories, looks at the current resources in place aimed at helping people better understand self-government and land claim agreements and gives policy recommendations to further support this. One of the r
North Korea claimed on Friday that the country's first COVID-19 outbreak began with patients touching "alien things" near the border with South Korea, apparently shifting blame to the neighbour for the wave of infections in the isolated country. Announcing results of an investigation, the North ordered people to "vigilantly deal with alien things coming by wind and other climate phenomena and balloons in the areas along the demarcation line and borders," the official KCNA news agency said. The agency did not directly mention South Korea, but North Korean defectors and activists have for decades flown balloons from the South across the heavily fortified border, carrying leaflets and humanitarian aid.
Hundreds of people turned out for the final leg of a four-month march from Vancouver to Ottawa by a Canadian soldier charged with criticizing federal vaccine mandates while in uniform. James Topp's arrival in the capital has prompted both fears and promises of a new round of protests starting Canada Day.
Medication abortions became the preferred method for ending pregnancy in the U.S. even before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. These involve taking two prescription medicines days apart — at home or in a clinic. Abortion procedures are an invasive medical technique that empties the womb. They are sometimes called surgical abortions, although they don’t involve surgery. Abortion by pills involves the drugs mifepristone and misoprostol. As more states seek abortion limits, demand for the
