Driver accused of killing bicyclist on a busy Charlotte road was impaired, police say
A bicyclist died on a busy Charlotte road after being hit by a driver accused of impairment, police said Friday.
Jeramie Mitchell Paige, 41, died at a hospital after the collision just before 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the 300 block of East Woodlawn Road, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department news release.
Police arrested 37-year-old Casey Hatley Ruppe and charged her with driving while impaired. Ruppe was released from the Mecklenburg County jail early Saturday after posting a $10,000 unsecured bond, jail records show.
Paige was riding eastbound without headlights and against traffic when an SUV driver hit him, CMPD said. The driver was turning left onto the road from a parking lot.
CMPD urged anyone who saw or has information about the crash to contact its major crash investigation unit at 704-432-2169, extension 5, or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600; http://charlottecrimestoppers.com/.
