Driver charged after collision topples pole, kills cyclist in York Region

A Toronto man is facing two charges in connection with a fatal collision in York Region Monday evening that left one cyclist dead and another seriously injured.

Police were called to the Dufferin Street and Steeles Avenue area around 6 p.m. Monday for reports of a serious collision. A black Mercedes Benz travelling southbound on Dufferin drove through the intersection at Glen Shields Avenue and collided with a black Hyndai, police say.

The Mercedes then collided with two cyclists and a light pole.

One of the cyclists, a 47-year-old woman from Richmond Hill, died at the scene when the pole fell. The second cyclist, a 55-year-old man also from Richmond Hill, was transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The occupants of the Mercedes and Hyundai suffered only minor injuries.

The driver of the Mercedes, identified as Olumide Banjo, 34, of Toronto, has been charged with dangerous operation causing death and dangerous operation causing bodily harm.

Banjo will appear in a Newmarket courtroom on Aug. 6.
