Driver dead after car hits sewer cover and catches on fire in south Kansas City

One person died in a single-vehicle crash in south Kansas City Tuesday night, police said.

Kansas City Police Department officers responded to the scene of a reported fatal crash at 11725 Grandview Road just after 11:30 p.m. A red Ford Focus was traveling north on Grandview road when, for an unknown reason, the car ran off the right side of the road.

The Ford Focus hit a raised sewer cover in front of a business, then traveled west across the road into an empty parking lot, said Phil DiMartino, a spokesman with KCPD, in an email. The car caught fire after coming to rest, DiMartino said.

Paramedics responded and pronounced the driver dead at the scene. Police have not yet released the gender or identity of the victim.

The crash marks Kansas City’s 69th traffic fatality of 2024, DiMartino said in an email. At this time last year, there were 65 traffic fatalities.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing and no other information was available Wednesday.
