Driver dies after his car was struck at an East Raleigh intersection, police say

A 65-year-old man died after a two-vehicle accident Friday night that may have been caused by a medical emergency, according to Raleigh police.

Robert Traczewski died at a hospital following the crash at the intersection of Freedom Drive and New Bern Avenue, Raleigh police said in a news release.

Traczewski was stopped at a red light in an Acura TL on Freedom Drive shortly before 9 p.m. when a Dodge Ram 1500 truck hit the driver’s side of his car.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of the Dodge Ram may have had a medical emergency, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway to the right before the intersection,” the news release said. “The vehicle drove up the culvert leading to Freedom Drive, causing it to go airborne.”

Raleigh police did not identify the man driving the pickup, who was also taken to the hospital with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.

No charges have been filed, but the crash remains under investigation, Raleigh police said.
