The driver whose erratically driven vehicle struck and killed two pedestrians last Saturday has died from injuries he sustained in the crash.

City police were alerted to an erratic driver in southwest Calgary at about 7 p.m. on Dec. 12. A short time later, officers saw the suspect vehicle go through an intersection on 17th Avenue S.W. at a high speed.

The officers tracked the vehicle down and got the driver to pull over, but as the officers approached the vehicle, it took off again. Police say they did not chase the fleeing vehicle.

Minutes later, the vehicle struck two pedestrians, both of whom died at the scene at the intersection of 85th Street and 17th Avenue S.W.

The victims were a 40-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman.

The driver, who suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash and had to be extricated from the vehicle by firefighters, died on Friday.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is handling the investigation because police were involved in the incident.

ASIRT says anyone who witnessed the incident or has video should contact investigators at 403-592-4306.
