Driver killed in fiery crash. Merced County authorities investigating

The death of a driver in a fiery crash in Merced County on Monday is under investigation by authorities.

Deputies responded to the fatal crash in the area of Bert Crane Road and Atwater Boulevard. at about 11:35 p.m. Monday, Merced County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Domingue said. The Merced County Sheriff Coroner’s Office has identified the driver as Miguel Angel Mojica, 27, of Merced.

Atwater Police Chief Michael Salvador said it appears the vehicle was traveling southbound on Atwater Boulevard after exiting the highway. For unknown reasons, the vehicle crashed into a cement abutment and the vehicle became engulfed in flames.

“Looks like it’s weather related,” Salvador said, noting it was extremely foggy at the time of the crash.

Authorities said the cause of the collision remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Atwater Police Department at 209-357-6396 and ask for Detective-Sgt. Sarginson or Sgt. Mulligan.
