Update: Driver in deadly crash allegedly driving over 100 mph near North Myrtle Beach
A driver died after hitting a tree while allegedly attempting to flee from police in the North Myrtle Beach area, according to Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Jahmeke Patrick-Gause, 31, of Little River, died of injuries sustained in the accident, according to Horry County Deputy Coroner Michelle McSpadden in an email.
Around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, police saw a car driving around 120 mph in a 65 mph zone along S.C. 31, according to the incident report. Police then tried to catch up to the vehicle which took the exit ramp to Robert Edge Parkway. While exiting, Patrick-Gause hit a road sign, lost control of the vehicle and continued driving.
An officer then tried to initiate a traffic stop along S.C. 90 by turning on their siren and lights, but Patrick-Gause kept driving, the incident report said. The pursuit continued until he drove off the highway and hit a tree near Princeton Drive.
Patrick-Gause died from their injuries on the scene, Glover said. He was the sole occupant of the car.
