Driver pulled from Deerfoot Trail crash wreckage dies in hospital

Bystanders pulled a 29-year-old man from the wreckage of a single-vehicle crash on Deerfoot Trail in Calgary Friday morning and paramedics rushed him to the nearest hospital, but were unable to save his life.

The man was pronounced dead at the South Health Campus after suffering severe injuries in the high-speed crash, according to police and paramedics.

The man was southbound in a 2005 Honda Accord around 7:45 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle, which then left the roadway and slammed into a large sign in the centre median just south of Seton Boulevard.

"The impact was very severe, causing the vehicle to split into several pieces," police said in a release.

EMS spokesman Adam Loria said the driver was initially pulled from the wreckage by motorists who stopped and also rendered first aid while contacting 911.

Paramedics then arrived and opted to take the injured man to the nearby South Health Campus rather than the Foothills Medical Centre "based on the location of where the incident took place and the immediate need for patient stabilization," Loria said.

Police believe speed was a factor in the crash but are still investigating.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact Const. Greene at 403-567-4000.
