Driver sentenced in crash that killed Colts' Edwin Jackson
The driver of the car that crashed and killed former Indianapolis Colts’ linebacker Edwin Jackson and his Uber driver has been sentenced to 16 years in prison, the Associated Press reported Friday.
Jackson, 26, and his driver Jeffrey Monroe, 57, pulled over to the side of the road on I-70 around 4 a.m. on February 4th when Jackson became ill. Investigators said a Ford pickup truck veered onto the shoulder striking the car and killing both men.
The driver who struck them was 37-year-old Manuel Orrego-Savala, originally from Guatemala, living in the U.S. illegally and driving without a license. He had twice been deported: first in 2007, then again in 2009 after arrests in California.
Orrego-Savala pled guilty in July to two counts of operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content of .15 or more (his was .19), causing death.
At the time, President Donald Trump used Jackson’s death to publicize his own immigration reform platform. He wrote on Twitter that it was “disgraceful that a person illegally in our country” had killed Jackson, and urged Democrats to “get tough on the border.”
