An 18-year-old man is in custody after police say he struck a pedestrian while driving in Montreal's Mile End neighbourhood, then stole a taxi to flee the scene.
The suspect was eventually tracked down in Laval.
The hit and run happened at around 2:15 a.m. near the corner of Bernard Avenue and St-Laurent Boulevard, said Montreal police Const. Jean-Pierre Brabant.
A car was heading north on St-Laurent when it struck a pedestrian trying to get into another car, then bashed into a lamp post.
Brabant said the driver of that car then took off in a taxi that had stopped to help the pedestrian.
The suspect is meeting with investigators and was given a breathalyzer test.
The pedestrian, a 28-year-old man, wasn't seriously hurt, Brabant said.
The area was reopened to traffic at around 7 a.m. Sunday.
