SINGAPORE — After a heated argument with her fiancé, a drunk woman lay in the middle lane of Jalan Sultan Road, causing a lorry to narrowly avoid a collision with her.

Another car behind the lorry also had to jam its brakes in a bid to avoid a collision.

Punitha Stephanie Nedunchezhiyan, 36, who had earlier lay on a path as well, pleaded guilty to causing annoyance while drunk in a public place and one count of committing a rash act to endanger the safety of others. Three charges of a similar nature will be considered for her sentencing.

On 21 July, Punitha and her fiancé argued at Textile Centre, after she drank two bottle of whiskey.

After a while, the woman shouted at her fiancé in front of a security desk on the first floor of Textile Centre. She then lay on a pavement outside of the building.

The security guard on duty called the police after receiving a call from a tenant about the couple making a lot of noise.

Around 12.48am, Punitha ran onto the three-lane Jalan Sultan Road outside Textile Centre. She lay on the middle lane.

The security guard then saw a lorry nearly colliding into Punitha. The driver jammed his brakes to avoid a collision, while a car behind the lorry did the same. After a while, Punitha’s fiance pulled her off the road. The couple were intending to walk away when police officers stopped them from leaving.

A blood specimen taken from Punitha after her arrest her showed that she had 144mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

She will be sentenced on 18 November.
