DUI suspect crashes into pole, cutting power to Bellingham’s Lakeway Drive area for hours

A new Bellingham Police Department badge is shown on Nov. 10, 2023. The new badges show the historic Old City Hall building and for the first come in both shiny gold plate and a muted nonrefelctive style.

A man suspected of driving while under the influence crashed into a Bellingham power pole, knocking out power in the area for several hours.

The man crashed his vehicle around 6:15 p.m. Thursday on Lakeway Drive, striking a power pole after running a red light and cutting power to the intersection of Woburn Street, Yew Street and Lakeway, according to a social media post by the Bellingham Police Department.

The 24-year-old driver was not injured in the crash, according to police, but he was arrested on suspicion of DUI and reckless driving. He was booked into Whatcom County Jail at 7:44 p.m. and remains in custody.

Power has since been restored to the area, according to Puget Sound Energy.
