Cyclist, 53, dead after crash involving delivery truck in Whitby

A 53-year-old cyclist is dead after a crash in Whitby on Tuesday morning, Durham police say.

Officers were called to Baldwin and Canary streets just after 11 a.m. for reports of a serious collision involving a delivery truck and a cyclist.

When crews arrived, police found the cyclist, Geoffrey Mitchell, lying in the middle of the road.

Police said Mitchell was travelling north on Baldwin Street when a FedEx delivery truck going west on Canary Street tried to make a left turn and struck the Whitby man.

Mitchell was rushed to hospital, where he later died, said Const. George Tudos.
