Dynamo's Beasley to retire at season's end

Houston Dynamo captain DaMarcus Beasley announced Monday that he will retire at the end of the MLS season, which is his 20th as a pro.

"Before my 37th birthday, I'd just like to say that this year will be my last," said Beasley, whose birthday is Friday. "I appreciate all the love, cheers and jeers throughout these past 20 years. Beasley has played in just one game this season, recently returning from arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in March.

Beasley will be walking away from a storied soccer career that includes 16 years on the U.S. national team. He is the only American man to play on four World Cup teams and accumulated 126 caps and tallied 17 goals.

He began his MLS career in 2000 with the Chicago Fire, and played there until 2004, when PSV Eindhoven of the Netherlands paid a $2.5 million transfer fee. He later played with Manchester City of the English Premier League, the Scottish Premier League's Rangers, German Bundesliga team Hannover 96 and Puebla of the Mexican league before returning to the United States and the Dynamo in 2014.

He has played in 211 MLS matches (199 starts) for the Fire and Dynamo (2014-19). He has 17 goals and 24 assists.
