E-joints, new form of marijuana, seized in New Brunswick

A new form of marijuana has appeared in New Brunswick — electronic marijuana vapour cigarettes.

E-joints were seized by the RCMP near Havelock during a vehicle search in October, Cpl. Martin Hachey from the RCMP Federal Operations East said in a statement.

"E-joints are becoming increasingly popular because they are odourless [and] harder to detect," said Hachey.

They look similar to a regular e-cigarettes, but contain cannabis oil and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component in marijuana, he said.

"It is important for the public, especially parents, to be aware that certain e-cigarettes may in fact contain components of marijuana."

The same laws and penalties for purchasing and possessing illicit drugs apply to e-joints, Hachey added.

A 39-year-old man from the Ottawa area has been charged with three counts of possession of controlled substances for the purposes of trafficking and three counts of trafficking controlled substances in connection with the seizure.

Large amounts of marijuana and hydromorphone were also seized during the vehicle search, said Hachey.

The accused has been released on conditions and will return to Moncton provincial court at a later date.

The investigation continues.
