Early morning fire does major damage to Mississauga business

No one was injured in an early morning fire in Mississauga that did major damage to Maxxit Systems, a business that creates fixtures and signage for stores.

Dan Green, acting platoon chief for Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services, said firefighters received a call about the fire on Lenworth Drive at the corner of Wharton Way at about 2:20 a.m.

"At that time there was a heavy body of fire within the building," he said.

The fire continued to grow through the early morning.

"There was an explosion on scene. We do have some partial roof collapse," said Green, who added that firefighters were concerned about the materials inside the business, which includes glues and laminates.

Miles Davis, a project manager at Maxxit Systems, said that the building also held lots of wood used in constructing fixtures.

"It's a family business," he said. "They started about eight years ago and they've been growing in leaps and bounds. This is a huge blow."

Patrick Smith, who works nearby, said he's worried about the smoke coming from the building.

"The chemicals that are in the building will present a great deal of hazard," he said.

The fire was still burning as of 9:00 a.m., and Wharton Way north of Dundas Street is being blocked by police.
