Earth Day events in Winnipeg aimed at a greener city
Called the "largest environmental event in the world" Earth Day encourages young and old to come up with local solutions to environmental problems and is meant to foster respect for the impact humans have on the planet.
The City of Winnipeg is taking part by promoting a number of local activities on Wednesday, April 22, geared to kids.
- The Children's Museum is offering a discount to school students from kindergarten to Grade 5 on Wednesday to learn how to create new things from recyclable materials. For more information, click here.
- Oak Hammock Marsh interpreters will show visitors the importance of wetlands by taking them for guided tours of the marsh. Pick up litter in the afternoon and you can win prizes. Get more info by clicking here.
- FortWhyte is celebrating Earth Day on Sunday, April 26. It's offering free admission and has lots of outdoor activities from games and workshops to live entertainment. More information is available by clicking here.

On Wednesday, adults and kids alike can get into the Earth Day spirit by pitching in to clean up downtown.The Downtown BIZ is hosting events at Thunderbird House on Main Street in the morning, and at Millennium Library Park later in the afternoon. Every year, participants pick up more and more litter, so the Downtown Biz is challenging Winnipeggers to improve on the 1.134 metric tons picked up last year.
