East Pierce County man injured after stepping in front of driver on SR 162, troopers say

Detectives with the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office discovered the body of Robert Erwin, a transient man who had been reported missing from the Yelm area, buried in a shallow grave near the Nisqually River on June 4.

A 74-year-old man was injured and transported to a hospital Friday when he stepped in front of a driver in South Prairie on state Route 162, which runs through the small east Pierce County town.

The Washington State Patrol said in a news release that the man was standing on the eastbound shoulder of the highway just east of Emery Avenue North when he stepped in front of a vehicle traveling east and was struck.

The incident was reported at 4:52 p.m. Troopers said the roadway was blocked for 20 minutes. The severity of the man’s injuries is unclear. According to the release, he was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center.

Troopers said the pedestrian who was struck, a South Prairie man, caused the collision by being in the roadway.

A 70-year-old Buckley woman was driving the 2015 Honda Civic that hit the man. She was uninjured.
