Eastern Health issues new number for arranging in-home flu shots

There’s a woman somewhere in Newfoundland and Labrador who’s breathing a little sigh of relief today.

On Wednesday, the woman, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told The Telegram she’s received several calls from people who weren’t putting the 1-800 in front of a toll-free number set up by Eastern Health to arrange getting the annual flu shot at home.

She said the authority should have vetted the number before making it public.

And Eastern Health listened.

The new number is 1-833-752-4167.

The health authority said in a news release that home visits by community health nurses are available to the very frail or homebound who cannot travel to a flu clinic, or visit a pharmacist or doctor to get their flu shot.

You can also call your local community health office from Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. to get a shot. Contact numbers can be found at www.easternhealth.ca/CommunityHealthLocations.

“Eastern Health thanks the public for their consideration and reminds individuals that getting a flu shot is important every year, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic,” the authority said. “Getting vaccinated will help reduce the spread of influenza in our communities and help reduce the impact on the health-care system in the event of a potential surge of COVID-19 cases.”

And yes, we checked.

The number works with or without the toll-free digits.
