ED coverage now in place for Stanfest weekend: NSH announces change, but ED still closed Thursday night

GUYSBOROUGH – Nova Scotia Health (NSH) issued a public service advisory on July 15 that the emergency department at the Eastern Memorial Hospital in Canso would be closed evenings from Monday, July 18 through to and including Friday, July 22.

It’s never a good time for the community of Canso to be without an emergency department, but this weekend, as the community prepares to welcome thousands of visitors and entertainers to the annual Stan Rogers Folk Festival (Stanfest), would be the worst possible time for a disruption in service.

On Tuesday morning (July 19), Stanfest Artistic Director Troy Greencorn told The Journal in an email, “We have been in touch with our MLA and are confident the issue will be remedied. It is absolutely essential that there be full medical capabilities locally with such a large influx of visitors to the community.”

That same morning, NSH issued another advisory stating, “The emergency department at Eastern Memorial Hospital in Canso will be open on Friday, July 22. It was previously announced that the department would be closed during the nightshift on Friday, July 22, but coverage has been found allowing the department to open. The department will also be open on Saturday and Sunday (July 23 & 24).”

However, as of press time, the Canso hospital’s emergency department was still scheduled to be closed Thursday night, when many Stanfest guests have already arrived and the kickoff event takes place.
