Edmonton-area community votes to keep photo radar

Morinville residents have voted to allow the town to continue to use photo radar and red light cameras to deter speeders.

While 525 residents voted to ban photo radar, 654 voted against in defeating the initiative.

The bedroom community north of Edmonton decided to poll its residents after 900 people signed a petition.

Photo radar currently brings in about $350,000 each year to the community and many people believe it's become a cash cow rather than a deterrent to speeders.

If the vote had succeeded, photo radar, laser and red light cameras would have been banned in Morinville for the next three years.

Strathcona County, east of Edmonton, banned photo radar two years ago.
