Police seeking third suspect after 2 shot and police fired upon

Edmonton police want the public's help to find a person they say fired at officers from a minivan during a high speed chase on Saturday night.

He is the third suspect they have now linked to a shooting that sent two people to hospital — one in life threatening condition — and included an attack on police officers as the gunmen tried to escape.

Police responded to a shooting at 432 Brintnell Blvd in the Hollick-Kenyon neighbourhood in northeast Edmonton at about 9 p.m. They found a man and a woman, both in their mid-30s, who had been shot.

EPS Staff Sgt Duane Hunter said investigators do not think this shooting was random.

"We believe that the victims were targeted and the suspects that we have in custody were waiting for them," said Hunter.

Both were transported to hospital where they remain. The man is in life-threatening condition, the woman is in stable, non-life-threatening condition.

Witnesses told police they saw two men leave the scene in an older minivan. Officers said Sunday they now believe a third suspect was in the vehicle with them.

Police say the men in the minivan refused to pull over, leading the police on a chase that saw the suspects drive "erratically" in the area around 130th Avenue and 70th Street.

"They got involved in a pursuit in the vehicle. During that pursuit, they actually fired at the police vehicles that were pursuing them," said Hunter.

Hunter said that several shots were fired and the vehicles were moving at a high rate of speed at the time.

"Luckily enough, there were no officers or bystanders injured in any way shape or form. And the vehicles weren't shot up either," said Hunter.

The minivan stopped at 86th Street and two men ran away. Police arrested the men, aged 21 and 27, in a nearby field.

Police are still trying to find the third suspect they now believe was also in the van.

Police say they hope new witnesses will come forward.

The two arrested men are still in custody. They face several charges, including attempted murder. Hunter said the attempted murder charge is related to shooting at police.
