Edmonton students compete for title of Mr. Pharmacy

Could this be bad medicine that's really good for you? Go to the University of Alberta campus on Saturday, Nov. 28 to find out.

Eight U of A pharmacy students will compete for the title of Mr. Pharmacy in a mock beauty pageant marinated in a James Bond theme.

The event will showcase the skills and smarts of competitors, and launch a month-long fundraising drive in support of the Movember campaign for men's health.

Competitors won't be your friendly neighbourhood pharmacists in white coats — far from it.

Pageant entrants will model their best beach wear, perform a choreographed "welcome dance" and show off their hidden talents.

In the past five years students have raised over $50,000. This year's goal is set at $20,000.

"It's mostly just a bunch of guys up on stage having a good time. You win mostly by appealing to the crowd," said contestant Roy Tram, who said he's willing to parade around in beach wear for a good cause.

Winners will receive a crown, a sash, bragging rights and a chance to compete in the national Mr. Pharmacy competition in Niagara Falls.

"It's pretty good-spirited, it's a competition, but hopefully we'll all still be friends afterward," said contestant Deon Sopko, with a laugh during a Tuesday morning interview with Edmonton AM radio show host Mark Connolly.

The Nov. 28 pageant fundraiser is at the Myer Horowitz Theatre on the U of A campus. Tickets, available here, are $21 for students and $31.50 for the general public.
