Edwin Encarnacion, Blue Jays DH/1B, resumes workouts after sports hernia surgery
Edwin Encarnacion is up and around, just not ready to step in the batter's box and face a 90-mile-per-hour heater.
The Toronto Blue Jays designated hitter/first baseman on Thursday tweeted a video of himself jogging in his native Dominican Republic.
Four weeks ago, the 32-year-old had surgery for a sports hernia but is expected to be ready for the start of spring training in late February, according to the team.
The sports hernia was another in a list of injuries for Encarnacion during the 2015 season that included hamstring and groin strains and a sprained ligament in the middle finger on his left hand that bothered him the final two months of the season.
Still, Encarnacion managed to hit 39 home runs, including 20 in the last two months of the regular season. He also posted a .277 batting average in 146 games with 111 runs batted in and a .929 on-base-plus slugging percentage for the American League East-champion Blue Jays.
In a five-game AL Division Series win over Texas, Encarnacion hit .333 with a homer and three RBIs.
But his production dipped in the AL Championship Series as Encarnacion hit just .227 with two RBIs in six games against the victorious Kansas City Royals, who went on to beat the New York Mets in the World Series.
