EI changes worry family violence group
Officials with P.E.I. Family Violence Prevention will be keeping a close eye on any impact Employment Insurance changes could have on Island families.
Executive director Phil Matusiewicz says the changes could cause problems for families with limited financial resources.
"If someone was to have to pick up and leave one community and go work in another community - you know, travel time is an hour away - it adds additional time to the working day, potentially complications to child care, all of which potentially creates stress in a family's life," said Matusiewicz.
"We know that sometimes that is the cause of family break up and violence in relationships."
The group regularly monitors the demand at Anderson House, the women's emergency shelter in Charlottetown, and for outreach services. EI factors will be monitored, said Matusiewicz, and programming adjusted accordingly.
He said demand for family violence outreach services in communities across the Island continues to grow.
