El Chapo's beauty queen wife threw 7-year-old twin daughters the most extravagant Barbie-themed birthday party

While their father sits awaiting trial in a Brooklyn prison, the twin daughters of drug kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán and beauty queen Emma Coronela celebrated their 7th birthdays with a party that Barbie-lovers could only dream of. “Maxima elegencia,” the party’s photographer Antonio Tizoc captioned an Instagram video, adding hashtags like “#barbieglamour and #piñatapersonalizadas.”

While it may not be considered elegant by all, the party was indisputably to the max. In addition to a three-tiered Barbie cake and life-sized Barbie mansion, the event featured hundreds of pink balloons, Barbie-themed table settings, a pink chandelier, a carnival ride, and a hot pink throne. Guzmán’s wife and mother of twins María Joaquina and Emali Guadalupe posed at the party in a form-fitting metallic skirt and high heels, writing on Instagram, “Cumpleaños de mis princesas.”

While the guest list to the party remains a secret, it seems those invited didn’t leave empty handed. According to Coronela’s current Instagram story, the giveaways included personalized Barbies that read “María Joaquina y Emali Guadalupe, 7 años.” (Mattel did not reply to Yahoo Lifestyle’s request for comment on the personalized barbies.)

Reactions to the birthday have been mixed on social media, which may explain why the comments on Coronela’s birthday posts have been turned off. But on the photographer’s Instagram, users continue to battle it out. Some have called the party “beautiful” and “extravagant” while others have pointed out the connection to the twins’ father. “Is not enjoying money full of other people’s blood enough?” wrote one user (in Spanish). Another fired back: “He is not a criminal mamasita because he helped a lot of people.”

Born into a Mexican farming family, El Chapo is generally recognized as one of the most dangerous drug lords on the planet. As the head of the Sinaloa cartel, he has been in and out of prison since the early 90s, and has escaped (successfully) multiple times. After being extradited to America in 2017, El Chapo was transferred to a prison in Brooklyn, where he is awaiting trial in November. He is facing multiple international drug trafficking charges, which — if found guilty — could land him in prison for life.

As his trial approaches, Coronela is continuing to live her life with the pair’s daughters, often posting pictures of their faces covered with emojis. In a recent one she appeared to clap back at haters, writing (in Spanish): “Cry until you fall asleep, wake up tomorrow, carry on because two daughters are my life. #emmacoronel”
