Elderly driver involved in Woodroffe Ave. overpass crash dies

A 73-year-old man who may have had a medical emergency in a three-vehicle crash on the Woodroffe Avenue overpass at Highway 417 on Thursday has died, police say.

The collision happened at the beginning of the Thursday afternoon rush-hour commute.

Ottawa paramedics spokesman J.P. Trottier said the driver had no traumatic injuries to explain why he was found with no vital signs behind the wheel around 3:30 p.m. He said it's possible a "medical event" may have led to the crash.

He was resuscitated and taken to hospital in critical condition.

Police confirmed Friday morning that the man had died overnight.

A 15-year-old boy was treated for an ankle injury after jumping out of the way of one of the vehicles that drove onto the sidewalk, paramedics said.

A 52-year-old woman was taken to hospital with neck and back injuries after the vehicle she was driving was involved in the crash, paramedics said.

The driver of the third vehicle involved in the crash, a man believed to be in his 30s, was taken to hospital to be treated for pain in his rib cage, paramedics said.
