Early in-person voting dates 2024

Many states also offer early in-person voting.

Among the earliest is Pennsylvania, where applications for mail-in ballots (which can be requested and submitted in-person during a single visit to an election office) were supposed to begin being processed on Sept. 16 but were delayed by legal challenges that held up finalization of the ballots. A Sept. 16 state Supreme Court decision resolved the last of those challenges and allowed counties to begin printing mail-in ballots.

Next are Minnesota and Virginia, where early voting will begin Sept. 20, and Illinois, where early in-person voting will begin Sept. 26. California and Nebraska will begin offering early voting beginning Oct. 7, and Wyoming polls will open on Oct. 8.

Alabama, Mississippi, and New Hampshire are the only states that offer no early in-person voting, aside from absentee ballots.

  • Pennsylvania counties were supposed to begin processing requests for mail ballots on Sept. 16, but that was delayed by cases before the state Supreme Court over whether several third-party candidates would appear on the ballot. The court's decision in the last of these challenges, on Sept. 16, rejecting Cornel West's bid to appear on the ballot, clears the way for counties to finalize and begin printing ballots. Voters can apply for mail ballots by mail or in-person at county election offices. When applying in-person at election offices, your application can be processed while you wait. You can then fill out and submit your mail-in ballot during that same visit or mail it in later. Your application must be received by 5 p.m. on Oct. 29 and your completed ballot by 8 p.m. on Nov. 5 (election day).
