School can seem like a drag when you’re a kid. It’s only later in life that we usually come to understand the huge importance of those early years of education.

One Oklahoma fifth grader was sensitive enough to recognize the pivotal role his elementary school teachers played in his life while he was still a kid — and he put his money where his mouth is by taking them all out to dinner on his own dime before he moved on to middle school.

Cody Dortch spent six months saving up as his elementary school graduation approached. By the time April arrived, Dortch had banked the $200 he estimated it would take to treat his teachers to a nice thank you dinner, reports Women’s World.

The dinner was held at Interurban restaurant, and seven teachers showed up. The 11-year-old handed each of them a long-stemmed rose and then made a speech about the role they had each played in making him who he is today.

“I realized my teachers are not just teachers,” Dortch told The Good News Network. “They have families — some even brought their kids to dinner…It’s like they have a whole other day’s work they have to cram in to a few hours before bed, but they still all took the time to come have dinner with me.”

“I’ve been teaching for 22 years and I’ve never had this happen,” said Marcy McVay, one of Dortch’s teachers told KOCO Oklahoma City News.

At the end of the meal, Dortch footed the bill as promised, and we’re guessing he sent his teachers home with smiles on their faces.
