Elizabeth Olsen Says She Had an "Awkward" Audition for Game of Thrones
It’s hard to imagine Game of Thrones’ Daenerys Targaryen as anyone but Emilia Clarke, but once upon a time, Elizabeth Olsen had her sights set upon the now-iconic role. But her audition didn’t go quite as expected. It wasn’t “burning down an entire city” bad, let’s just say it was a little uncomfortable.
In a recent interview with Vulture, the Avengers actor revealed that she tried out for the HBO series nearly a decade ago, noting that she had auditioned for “everything” when she first started out.
“I auditioned for Khaleesi,” Elizabeth recalled, adding: “It was the most awkward audition I’d ever had.”
The reason for the awkward vibes? According to Elizabeth, it had to do with the voice she used to deliver a monologue from Game of Thrones’s first season. “[From] after she just burned,” the actor elaborated. “And she’s making this speech to thousands of people about how she’s their queen. They didn’t know if they wanted a British accent or not. So, you did it in both. It was terrible. Anytime someone says, 'bad audition story,' that’s one I remember.”
Fortunately, Elizabeth’s “awkward” GoT audition didn’t scare her away from trying out for other projects. Fresh off the hype of Avengers: Endgame, the actor is continuing her role as the Scarlet Witch in the upcoming Disney+ series, WandaVision, which will reportedly be set in the 1950s.
As for Game of Thrones, the series ended on May 19, after eight seasons, and it seems Elizabeth was as much a fan as the rest of us, despite not landing the role of Dany. “I’m just so deep in Game of Thrones that all I can think about is Kit Harington,” she told Vulture. “I mean, he’s just brainwashed me.” Same, girl, same.
