Ellen DeGeneres: All the Celebrities Standing by Her During Her Talk Show Controversy

There is a lot of controversy surrounding Ellen DeGeneres right now—but several celebrities are coming to her defense.

But the abridged version: Several reports have trickled out over the past few weeks alleging The Ellen DeGeneres Show has a “toxic” workplace environment, including incidents of microaggressions and racist comments.  This BuzzFeed article kickstarted the wave, and then several weeks later, another BuzzFeed report came out outlining sexual misconduct allegations against  Kevin Leman, a head writer and executive producer at the show. 

Leman released a statement after the story was published denying “any kind of sexual impropriety.” As for DeGeneres, a leaked memo that People obtained shows her apologizing to staff for how the show’s been run. “As we’ve grown exponentially, I’ve not been able to stay on top of everything and relied on others to do their jobs as they knew I’d want them done,” she wrote. “Clearly some didn’t. That will now change and I’m committed to ensuring this does not happen again.”

DeGeneres is most likely referring to executive producers Andy Lassner, Ed Glavin, and Mary Connelly, who in their own joint statement wrote, “For the record, the day-to-day responsibility of the Ellen show is completely on us. We take all of this very seriously and we realize, as many in the world are learning, that we need to do better, are committed to do better, and we will do better.”

This, coupled with multiple (unsubstantiated) stories about how DeGeneres may not be as nice as her public persona seems, has put a lot of negative attention on the longtime host. But she does have some people in her corner. DeGeneres’s wife, Portia de Rossi, broke her silence on this controversy August 3 via Instagram, writing, “To all our fans....we see you. Thank you for your support.” She included several hashtags, including #IStandByEllen.
