Ellen DeGeneres Jokes About Switching 'Be Kind' Catchphrase to 'Go F--- Yourselves' in Trailer for Netflix Special (Exclusive)

'For Your Approval,' which is slated to be DeGeneres' final comedy special, premieres on Sept. 24

Ellen DeGeneres is bringing the laughter one final time!

PEOPLE can exclusively reveal the trailer for the comedian's upcoming Netflix special, For Your Approval. The stand-up comedy special, set to premiere on Sept. 24, is slated to be the last of DeGeneres' career.

In the trailer, DeGeneres, 66, takes the stage for the first time in six years, telling the audience she'd catch them up on what she's been up to lately. She mentions taking up gardening, getting chickens and then addresses the elephant in the room: "I got kicked out of show business," she says.

"The 'be kind' girl wasn't kind, that was the headline," DeGeneres continues. "Here's the problem: I am comedian who got a talk show and I ended the show every day by saying, 'Be kind to one another.' Had I ended my show by saying 'go f--- yourselves,' people would've been pleasantly surprised to find out I'm kind."

Elsewhere in the trailer, DeGeneres jokes about women having confidence, saying that "most women aren't raised with confidence. We're too self-conscious, which is why you rarely see a woman playing air guitar."

The comedian also jokes she went into showbiz, not for money but to heal her "childhood wounds."

"I thought, if I could make people happy, they'll like me. And if they like me, I'll feel good about myself," she says. "And all I can say about that is, thank god for the money!"

According to the special's description, DeGeneres is expected to go "deep into her stand-up roots and brings the laughs through life's most real and absurd realities."

Her big return to the comedy world comes after she ended her long-running talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, in May 2022 after 19 seasons. Beforehand, she confirmed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the toxic workplace allegations her eponymous series faced didn't factor into her decision to conclude the series.

"When you're a creative person, you constantly need to be challenged — and as great as this show is, and as fun as it is, it's just not a challenge anymore," she said at the time.

Two years later, DeGeneres announced her plans to hit the road for her Ellen’s Last Stand… Up tour.

Kicking things off in San Diego on June 19, the 27-stop tour was set to last through Aug. 17. However, a hiccup occurred in July as Ticketmaster issued an “event canceled” message to fans attending DeGeneres’ Dallas, San Francisco, Seattle and Chicago shows, which were scheduled to occur between July and August.

In one of her summer tour stops, the comedian addressed the future of her career, with SFGate reporting her saying, "This is the last time you’re going to see me. After my Netflix special, I’m done."

For Your Approval marks DeGeneres' second original comedy special with Netflix, following 2018’s Relatable.
