Ellen Page tweets support for friend Lucy DeCoutere in the midst of Jian Ghomeshi trial

Ellen Page has spoken out in support of her close friend Lucy DeCoutere who bravely took the stand during the trial of Jian Ghomeshi in Toronto. The actress is one of three women testifying against the former CBC radio personality, who is facing four counts of sexual assault and one count of overcome resistance by choking, He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

“My friend @lucydecoutere is one of the most incredible people I know -- deeply kind, generous and brave,” tweeted the actress following Lucy’s difficult two days in court. During the third and fourth day of the trial, the Edmonton-born actress faced intense questioning by Jian’s lawyer, Marie Henein, who used email correspondence to try to discredit Lucy’s claims that the accused slapped and choked her without her consent in the summer of 2003.

Lucy’s lawyer Gillian Hnatiw was quick to reiterate that her client is not on trial and focus needs to be redirected to examine the actions of the former Q host. Worried that the events in the courtroom might deter abuse victims from speaking out, the Trailer Park Boys actress released the following statement via her lawyer. “Lucy wants survivors of violence to know that what they do in the aftermath when they are harmed in no way changes the truth.”
