Emanuel Miller’s late 3-pointer lifts TCU Horned Frogs over Georgetown
TCU needed some late game heroics from Emanuel Miller to pull off a comeback over Georgetown in Washington, D.C., on Saturday.
With the Horned Frogs trailing 83-81 with less than 3 seconds remaining after a pair of Jayden Epps free throws, Micah Peavy launched a near full-court pass to Miller, who turned and hit a running floater from nearly 30 feet off glass to lift the Horned Frogs to a stunning 84-83 comeback win.
The Horned Frogs improved to 7-0 on the season. Miller finished with a career-high 29 points and nailed three 3-pointers to keep TCU’s unbeaten streak alive.
The heroic moment wasn’t without controversy as it appeared Miller stepped out of bounds on the shot, but since the officials didn’t call it live that aspect of the shot wasn’t reviewable, only the clock was.
The Horned Frogs desperately needed that break after blowing a 15-point second-half lead. At the start of the second half, TCU went on a 9-1 surge in taking a 53-38 lead and seemed poised to run the Hoyas out of the gym.
Instead, Georgetown climbed back in it on 3-point shooting. The Hoyas knocked three 3s during a six-minute stretch that eventually made it 61-59 with 11 minutes, 11 seconds remaining in the game.
Miller came alive at this point as he went on a personal 7-0 run with two baskets in the paint and a 3 that gave TCU a 68-67 advantage. But the Hoyas grabbed control and held a 81-75 lead with less than two minutes to go.
Before Miller’s 3, Jameer Nelson and JaKobe Coles hit back-to-back clutch 3-pointers to tie at 81-81 with just under 90 seconds remaining.
Coles finished with 17 points and went 8 of 12 from the field while Avery Anderson added 11 points off the bench. It was far from a clean game for the Horned Frogs, who shot 53% from the free-throw line and allowed 12 3-pointers on 48% shooting which will surely be frustrating for TCU head coach Jamie Dixon.
However, it was expected there was going to be some adversity with this being the first game for TCU away from Schollmaier Arena.
TCU will have the week off before facing Clemson in Canada on Dec. 9. The Tigers have the looks of a NCAA Tournament team and recently defeated No. 23 Alabama 85-77.
